The next meeting of leaders of the INDIA alliance will be held on December 19 in Delhi, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said Sunday, days after the bloc’s meeting was deferred as some of the leaders had expressed their inability to attend.
According to a post by the Congress leader on X (formerly Twitter), the meeting, where the leaders are likely to discuss and finalise their plan to take on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the 2024 polls, will be held at 3 pm.

The Congress had been facing the heat of other parties in the alliance following its poor performance in the recently held Assembly elections. The party had let it known that it had convened a meeting of the INDIA bloc on December 6. The news took many leaders of the alliance by surprise since they had no information about the meeting. As most of the leaders of the other parties in the alliance decided to skip the meeting citing various reasons, an embarrassed Congress had scaled down the meeting to a gathering of floor leaders in Parliament. It said the meeting of heads of parties would now be held in the third week of December.

Most of the leading parties of the INDIA alliance, especially the TMC, AAP and the JD(U) are upset with the Congress for stalling the activities of the INDIA bloc, including seat-sharing talks, citing the Assembly elections.

Most of them believe the INDIA bloc lost the political momentum it had gained after its formation and back-to-back meetings in Patna, Bengaluru and Mumbai because of the break.

The 26-party opposition alliance, which has been formed to jointly take on the ruling BJP at the Centre in next year’s elections, have already had three rounds of deliberations in Patna, Bengaluru and Mumbai.
